Position Summary: Weed Warriors support OMSI’s sustainability goals by creating a welcoming and healthy environment for humans, animals and plants around the museum campus. Volunteers who are comfortable working with their hands in the dirt and who find satisfaction in a well-maintained garden will enjoy this position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Clean planter beds and bioswales as part of the overall landscape plan
- Identify and remove invasive plants or weeds
- Support seasonal projects, such as planting or raking, following environmentally-friendly practices
- Coordinate with Facilities team on identifying weekly focus areas
Knowledge and Skills:
- Passion for environmental-friendly practices in outdoor planter beds
- Familiarity with identifying invasive plants
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
- Able to sit, stand, and kneel for 2 of 4 hours outdoors
- Able to push and pull 50 pounds
- Able to lift and carry 4 to 6 pounds
- Dependable and punctual
- Willing to follow OMSI rules and procedures
Schedule and Support:
- Recurring Schedule: 4 to 16 hours per month on Mondays
- Equipment such as tools, gloves, PPE and buckets will be provided
- Breaks as needed depending on outside weather conditions
- Attend the following trainings or classes provided by OMSI:
- Volunteer Orientation
- COVID-19 Safety Training
- Area-specific Emergency Protocols
- Facilities property orientation and duties preview

OMSI’s mission is to inspire curiosity through engaging science learning experiences, foster experimentation and the exchange of ideas, and stimulate informed action. Volunteers support the operation of five exhibit halls and eight science labs and hundreds of interactive exhibits and hands-on demonstrations.

OMSI is an independent non-profit 501(c)(3) organization and relies on admissions, memberships, and donations to continue our educational mission, programs, and exhibits.
