Astra Labs is a 501(c)3 non-profit that builds software-based resources to help people get access to the help they need. We currently have 2 resources, and serve 120,000+ users through them.
Right now, we're in the middle of pivoting all of our codebases to an open-source & centralized design system, and rebuilding all of our resources from Swift to Flutter. You can read more about our Gen 2.0 plan here, and why we're doing it.
We're looking for volunteers who:
- Have experience with Flutter (beginners are welcome).
- Are familiar with writing open-source code, and building packages for 3rd party developers to use.
- Want to work on projects that focus on a wide variety of issues. Astra is different than other non-profits in the way that we have many resources focusing on different areas.
- Are aligned with our ethics, values, and our mission. Our users and their safety and trust is our biggest priority, and we deeply invest in making sure our volunteers are educated on what we have in place to do that.
What you'll be doing:
- Working on finalizing & QA testing our main design system, Aureus. Aureus is the foundation for all of our other codebases, and will eventually be released to other non-profits to help them develop their own software.
- Using Aureus to develop 3 other codebases for Android / iOS - two of them currently on the App Store and one of them in development.
- Working from pre-existing C4 charts, designs, and other infrastructure to build these apps.
- Having a check-in call once a week with the development team to align and get up to speed.
- Using JIRA, Figma, Discord, Google Suite, and GitHub to build our resources.
Commitment:
- Initial onboarding & training to use our structure
- Joining our Discord server & Github
- 1 hour/ week for a Dev/Ops meeting
- 0-5 hours of development time a week (depending on schedule & timelines).
What we bring:
- A company Minecraft server
- Community service hours for a 501(c)3 non-profit.
- References & recommendation letters for future jobs & placements
- A place where your code and skills directly go to impact. The code you write gets shipped directly to 100,000+ people to help them deal with the hardest situations of their lives. If you want to make a direct impact with your skills, this is where to go.
As an organization, our core idea is that when we go through pain, we have the tools to make sure other people don't experience that same pain.
If you want to learn, help people, and you believe in a future where software should be able to get people to the future they're meant to have without any strings attached, Astra Labs is the place for you.
