We are looking for a female volunteer who is interested in mentoring an 18-year-old refugee from Honduras. She entered the U.S. in September of 2019 and she has been part of Bethany's program since May of 2020. She spent her first year in one of our residential group homes and recently moved out to a semi-independent living placement with a family in Middleville.

Her case manager shared, "She has had a hard time adjusting to her new placement because she misses friends at the group home. Her current placement is in Middleville, which I think contributes to her loneliness because it is far from GR and she doesn’t have her license to drive yet. She is showing great strength and resilience by continuing to try and adjust to this placement despite being disappointed in some ways. Her SIL parents are awesome and doing everything they can to help her adjust. Right now, everyone is trying to support her and help prepare her for Independent Living, which is her goal.

This youth is honestly a joy to be around and one of the most energetic clients I’ve ever met. She loves to have fun and always wants to be doing some activity with anyone who will enjoy her. She is someone who needs hugs, affirmations, and friendship. She doesn’t seem to do well with people who aren’t very outgoing because I think she perceives this as someone not being interested/caring about her. A good mentor fit for her is someone who is creative, active, likes to do fun things, and has an outgoing personality where they can have good, uplifting conversations with her

Mission Statement

Bethany demonstrates the love and compassion of Jesus Christ by protecting children, empowering youth, and strengthening families through quality social services.

Description

For refugees fleeing danger, the search for safety can be extremely challenging. And too often, people become numbers in a system that can feel impossible to navigate. That’s why we guide, protect, advocate for, and support refugees. In the U.S., we offer resettlement and continued support services in strategic locations.

Bethany Christian Services' Refugee and Immigrant Services program encompasses adult and family resettlement as well as refugee foster care for Unaccompanied Children and Unaccompanied Refugee Minors. Our services for unaccompanied refugee youth include case management, counseling, housing (foster homes, group homes, independent living), classes (New Arrival, Life Skills, driver's training), and volunteer mentoring and tutoring.
