When you think of hospice volunteering, sewing may not be the first thing that comes to mind. But if you’re someone who can sew and loves to make handcrafted items, Brookhaven Hospice’s Memory Bear Program may be just what you are looking for. Families are incredibly moved, grateful and very appreciative upon receiving their Memory Bear(s) and you can be the volunteer who makes this happen!

You will have the honor of creating a bear from garments once worn by the patient, such as a favorite shirt, sweater, dress, night gown, jacket or maybe even a blanket that was special to the patient. These garments are then transformed into memorable teddy bears by our volunteer seamstresses. We give our Memory Bear Volunteers 4-8 weeks from when they receive the clothing to make the Memory Bear. We will provide a Memory Bear pattern, the fill for the bears and eyes too, if you would like.

I look forward to hearing from you!
