Most visitors share a few common simple needs: a clean, quiet and friendly place where they can relax and enjoy the great outdoors. Florida State Parks provide the setting but often lack the personnel to offer the level of hospitality desired. That’s why volunteers are so valuable. As emissaries of the Florida Park Service they make the difference between an adequate and excellent experience. Understanding the value of good visitor service and how that transcends into public support for Florida State Parks is of primary importance in this position. This volunteer position working in the ranger station greets park visitors and sets the tone for their entire experience as this is the first point of contact.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:

The ability to work well with others, display a good attitude and be flexible is a must.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Ability to take initiative and exercise judgment as situations require.

Good people skills-courteous and professional manners on the phone, radio and in person

A neat and professional appearance

Ability to work a cash register efficiently and complete daily financial reports.

Ability and desire to acquire park knowledge necessary to answer visitors’ questions

Ranger station positions can be strenuous at times, requiring the ability to stand on tile surface for several hours in duration, maintain focus through many distractions as well as bend, stoop and twist to clean or pick up materials, etc.

Moderate lifting of boxed materials, emptying of trash cans and receiving packages will require the ability to lift and carry.

Several hours of work each day will expose volunteers to high heat & humidity during the summer months and chilly, damp weather during winter cold snaps.

About Myakka River State Park

Location:

13208 State Road 72, Sarasota, FL 34241, US

Mission Statement

The mission of the Florida Park Service is to provide resource-based recreation while preserving, interpreting, and restoring natural and cultural resources.

Description

Myakka River State Park is one of Florida's largest and most diverse natural areas. The "Florida Wild and Scenic" Myakka River flows through 58 square miles of wetlands, prairies, hammocks and pinelands. The river and its two shallow lakes attract a myriad of wetland creatures making birding, canoeing, fishing and wildlife observation popular activities. A seven-mile scenic drive winds through shady oak-palm hammocks and along the shore of the Upper Myakka Lake. Over thirty-nine miles of hiking trails and many dirt service roads provide access to the park’s remote interior. Large expanses of rare Florida dry prairie thrive here thanks to intense restoration efforts. This globally-imperiled community suffered many decades of fire exclusion before people realized how dependent these grasslands were on frequent fire. Myakka River State Park is one of the state’s oldest parks. It was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934. Many of the original, historic buildings are still in use today, including five log rental cabins. You can even explore the treetops on Myakka’s canopy walkway and climb the seventy-four-foot tower for an awesome bird’s eye view.
