ORGANIZATION: Bethany Christian Services

  • 3 people are interested

We are looking for Spanish-speaking or ESL/ELL trained volunteers who are interested in tutoring refugee teens at one of our residential group homes on the northwest side of Grand Rapids. These youth are primarily from Central American countries, and many need additional academic assistance as they continue to learn English.

Tutors would be paired one-on-one with a specific client or participate in a weekly tutoring drop-in time during which they would be available for any youth at the home who needed help that week. We ask for a minimum of a 6-month commitment from our tutoring volunteers, and tutors are expected to volunteer for at least one, 1-hour session every week.

Mission Statement

Bethany demonstrates the love and compassion of Jesus Christ by protecting children, empowering youth, and strengthening families through quality social services.

Description

For refugees fleeing danger, the search for safety can be extremely challenging. And too often, people become numbers in a system that can feel impossible to navigate. That’s why we guide, protect, advocate for, and support refugees. In the U.S., we offer resettlement and continued support services in strategic locations.

Bethany Christian Services' Refugee and Immigrant Services program encompasses adult and family resettlement as well as refugee foster care for Unaccompanied Children and Unaccompanied Refugee Minors. Our services for unaccompanied refugee youth include case management, counseling, housing (foster homes, group homes, independent living), classes (New Arrival, Life Skills, driver's training), and volunteer mentoring and tutoring.
