Austin Kids Can! (AKC!) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization (austinkidscan.org), dedicated to closing the achievement gap in economically disadvantaged children in Austin, Texas. We accomplish this by providing high-quality afterschool programming in Computer Science & Coding and Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) to at-risk elementary students.
AKC! is seeking a Part-Time Teaching Volunteer for approximately 5 hours per week, co-teaching SEL at AISD elementary campuses.
Primary Responsibilities
- Co-teach an SEL class (along with a Computer Science/Coding teacher) for at least one full semester
- Prepare for this position by reviewing SEL strategies/expectations
- Maintain a productive and respectful classroom environment using SEL strategies
- Take attendance in class
- Communicate effectively with AKC! staff and school site staff
- Communicate effectively with parents/guardians of the students enrolled including progress reporting on academics and behavior
- Work collaboratively with the Computer Science/Coding teacher
Minimum Qualifications
- High professional standards and dedication to the organization’s mission, staff, and students
- Experience working with children (ages 5-11) in a classroom setting OR knowledge about best practices
- Effective teaching and behavior management skills OR knowledge about best practices
- Some college or currently enrolled in a college program
- Must have availability from 3:00-5:30 pm, either Monday & Wednesday OR Tuesday & Thursday
- Reliable transportation to Austin ISD elementary schools
- Must pass a criminal background check
Preferred Qualifications
- Understanding of and/or experience in working in a small organization, non-profits, and/or start-ups
- CPR certification
