Austin Kids Can! (AKC!) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization (austinkidscan.org) that empowers Austin’s youth who are economically disadvantaged by providing access to high-quality afterschool programs that build emotional resilience, self-confidence, and a foundation for technology skills. We accomplish this by providing afterschool programming in Computer Science & Coding and Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) to at-risk elementary students.
AKC! is seeking an In-Person Volunteer for approximately 2-3 hours per week supporting Computer Science & Coding classes at Austin ISD elementary campuses.
Primary Responsibilities
- Support the afterschool teacher in the Computer Science & Coding class for at least one full semester
- Maintain a productive and respectful classroom environment
- Communicate effectively with AKC! staff and school site staff
- Provide individual and small group instruction to students learning to code
Minimum Qualifications
- Understanding of block coding or willingness to learn on Code.org
- Must have availability from 4:00-5:30 pm on Monday & Wednesday OR Tuesday & Thursday
- Reliable transportation to location; flexibility to work at different locations
- Must pass a criminal background check
- High professional standards and dedication to the organization’s mission, staff, and students
Preferred Qualifications
- Interest in coding
- Experience in an elementary-aged classroom environment
- Understanding of and/or experience in working in a small organization, non-profit, or start-up
Compensation: Unpaid Volunteer.
