Afterschool Volunteer: Elementary Computer Science & Coding (In-Person)

AUSTIN KIDS CAN

Austin Kids Can! (AKC!) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization (austinkidscan.org), dedicated to closing the achievement gap in economically disadvantaged children in Austin, Texas. We accomplish this by providing high-quality afterschool programming in Computer Science & Coding and Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) to at-risk elementary students.

AKC! is seeking an In-Person Volunteer Instructor for approximately 3 hours per week supporting Computer Science & Coding classes at Austin ISD elementary campuses.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support the afterschool teacher in the Computer Science & Coding class for at least one full semester
  • Maintain a productive and respectful classroom environment
  • Communicate effectively with AKC! staff and school site staff
  • Provide individual and small group instruction to students learning to code

Minimum Qualifications

  • High professional standards and dedication to the organization’s mission, staff, and students
  • Understanding of block coding OR experience working with children (ages 5-11) in a classroom setting
  • Must have availability from 4:00-5:30 pm on Monday & Wednesday OR Tuesday & Thursday
  • Reliable transportation to location; flexibility to work at different locations
  • Must pass a criminal background check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in coding
  • Experience in an elementary-aged classroom environment
  • Understanding of and/or experience in working in a small organization, non-profit, or start-up
  • CPR certification

Compensation: Unpaid Volunteer.

1 Shift

  • 04:00 PM to 05:30 PM
    Must have availability from 4:00-5:30 pm on Monday & Wednesday OR Tuesday & Thursday
