Serenity Hospice hospice relies on volunteer support to provide excellent end-of-life care to each patient and family.
By being a hospice volunteer, you can gain great personal satisfaction from knowing that you have made an impact in another person’s life at the time it matters most.
Volunteers can work in all phases of hospice, providing clerical and administrative assistance as well as direct patient and family care. Many volunteers are introduced to hospice through the death of a family member or loved one, but others come to gain experience as medical students, help out their community, or simply to lend a hand to someone in need.

There are many ways to help! Some volunteer opportunities include:

  • Visiting patients- companionship, doing a puzzle, reading a book, spending time with hospice patients.
  • Vigil support- sitting near a patient's bedside as they are passing away
  • Office or administrative work- filing, copying, putting together cards or packets
  • Supporting family members- helping with light housework or chores, giving a caregiver a break, running an errand.
  • Supporting the hospice bereavement team- bereavement cards, bereavement phone calls
  • There are many opportunities and always a way for people of all ages to lend a hand!
All volunteers will be trained so they are fully ready for their role as volunteers in a comprehensive training, with modules including:
  • Philosophy of hospice care.
  • A comprehensive overview of services offered by the hospice.
  • Physical, emotional, social and spiritual issues that people can encounter at the end of life.
  • Individual needs, including emotional support, emergency procedures, universal precautions and procedures to follow after the hospice patient dies.
  • An overview of chronic and life-limiting illnesses.
  • Effective communication skills when speaking with the patient and family members.
  • Information about interpersonal family issues and relationships.
  • Boundaries for the hospice volunteer and the patient and family.
  • Basic information about grief and loss.

For more details about our upcoming training and application process, or more insight on what it is like to work in hospice, please contact Hannah Larson, volunteer coordinator, or visit our website www.serenityhospice.org for more information.
