The San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory is a nonprofit in Milpitas, CA, with the mission to conserve birds and their habitats through science and outreach. Each year more than 100 volunteers help us collect data on birds, restore habitat, educate the community, and promote and raise money for our work.

We are looking for a volunteer to help manage our Volunteer Program. Duties include managing our volunteer spreadsheet, setting up new volunteer interviews, reaching out to references, organizing waivers and other information, working on volunteer surveys, writing information about the Volunteer Program for our website, newsletters, and social media; and helping our staff develop ways to streamline and enhance our Volunteer Program and the volunteer experience.

The position is currently remote and can continue to be remote or transition to in person at our office in Milpitas, CA, once our office opens up per Covid safety protocols. The position requires a commitment of around 2-3 hours a week and the schedule can be flexible around the person's availability.

The right candidate will be someone who is organized and detail oriented; has great communication skills; has reliable internet access and is able to use email, spreadsheets, and Google Docs and Forms; is creative and analytical; enjoys helping people; believes in our mission to conserve birds and habitats; and wants to learn more about the field of conservation science and be part of a great team!

The San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory is a nonprofit science organization dedicated to the conservation of birds and their habitats through science and outreach, and to contributing to informed resource management decisions in the Bay Area.

Description

The Bird Observatory was founded in 1981 by a group of enthusiastic biology students from San Jose State University. We study waterbirds and landbirds of the Bay Area, and also provide bird walks and other interpretive activities for the public. We currently have 6 staff and about 900 members. Our biologists work with nearly 100 volunteers in our fieldwork.
