ORGANIZATION: SOUTH END NEIGHBORHOOD TUTORS

Image_202107210616

The Wizard's Wardrobe is a free, after-school tutoring program for elementary students in the South End of Albany, NY. When working with the children, we concentrate on reading, writing and problem solving skills.

Our tutors take a two-day training that focuses on the effects that racism and poverty have on our students, along with brain development, the 5 components of reading, and lesson planning,

We are looking for people who are willing to commit one or two days a week for approximately 2 hours each time to tutoring with the same student, forming a relationship that is as important as the tutoring itself. This commitment is for a school year.

We will be holding our next training for this school year on the Saturdays of Sept. 9th & 23rd, from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. We provide a light breakfast, snacks and beverages. There will be trainings in November and January if you cannot come in September.

Anyone interested in applying needs to have had the COVID vaccination in order to take the training and tutor. For more information, please contact Debra Fagans at edfagans@mac.com.

About SOUTH END NEIGHBORHOOD TUTORS

Location:

PO BOX 61, ALBANY, NY 12201, US

Mission Statement

Connecting elementary school children with caring and dedicated tutors, our one-on-one tutoring program enhances literacy, fosters creativity, and supplements classroom learning in the South End of Albany. Reading is essential *** One-on-one tutoring works *** Every child has worth

Description

After tutoring within a nearby elementary school for several years, a number of us decided to do more and started an after-school tutoring program located about a block east of the elementary school 3 1/2 years ago. The school is located in a low-income neighborhood and the only 13% of the children in the 3rd - 6th grade read on grade level.

Starting our program with 1st and 2nd graders, and remaining with them through their elementary years, it is the hope to have all our students reading on grade level by the end of third grade. This gives them a chance to be successful students when they reach middle school.

We work with the students to improve reading, writing and problem solving skills. The five components of reading are stressed - phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. We publish an anthology of the students' writing at the end of each year. And there is a STEM problem with no "right" answer to challenge their creativity each month.

We have had a two of our students moved into the elementary school's Young Scholars Program.

We are looking for tutors who will be committed to working with the same student for at least one school year. We also need board members and a webmaster.
