ORGANIZATION: SOUTH END NEIGHBORHOOD TUTORS

Do you believe that every child has the potential to read? Are you interested in helping a struggling elementary age student improve their reading, writing and problem solving? If so, please consider volunteering at Wizard's Wardrobe, a free, one-to-one, after-school tutoring program for elementary students in the South End of Albany, NY.

You don't need teaching experience to tutor. You'll take a two-day training focused on the effects of racism and poverty on our students, along with brain development, the 5 components of reading, and lesson planning. You'll also have experienced teachers on-site to help and advise you.

Your tutoring commitment would be for one or two afternoons each week during the school year from around 2:30 to 4:30 or 3:30 to 5:30. You would tutor the same student all year, forming a positive relationship that is as rewarding and important as the tutoring itself.

Our next training for the 2025-26 school year will be on two Saturdays (usually the second and third Saturdays) in September, November, and January from 8:45 AM to 4:00 PM. New this year: two weekday training days for those who cannot attend on Saturday.*

We provide a light breakfast, snacks and beverages. The new tutor training dates are:

September 13 and 20, 2025 (Saturdays)

*October 13 (Monday) and October 24 (Friday), 2025

November 8 and 15, 2025 (Saturdays)

January 10 and 17, 2026 (Saturdays)

About SOUTH END NEIGHBORHOOD TUTORS

Location:

PO BOX 61, ALBANY, NY 12201, US

Mission Statement

Connecting elementary school children with caring and dedicated tutors, our one-on-one tutoring program enhances literacy, fosters creativity, and supplements classroom learning in the South End of Albany. Reading is essential *** One-on-one tutoring works *** Every child has worth

Description

After tutoring within a nearby elementary school for several years, a number of us decided to do more and started an after-school tutoring program located about a block east of the elementary school 3 1/2 years ago. The school is located in a low-income neighborhood and the only 13% of the children in the 3rd - 6th grade read on grade level.

Starting our program with 1st and 2nd graders, and remaining with them through their elementary years, it is the hope to have all our students reading on grade level by the end of third grade. This gives them a chance to be successful students when they reach middle school.

We work with the students to improve reading, writing and problem solving skills. The five components of reading are stressed - phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. We publish an anthology of the students' writing at the end of each year. And there is a STEM problem with no "right" answer to challenge their creativity each month.

We have had a two of our students moved into the elementary school's Young Scholars Program.

We are looking for tutors who will be committed to working with the same student for at least one school year. We also need board members and a webmaster.
