BOARD MEMBER JOB DESCRIPTION

Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Georgia's mission is to improve maternal and infant health through advocacy, education, and access to vital resources. Our vision is to create a Georgia where every mother and baby has the resources and support to be healthy and thrive throughout the perinatal period. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit employing a diverse group of participants and catering to an equally diverse audience. To help us further promote our mission and grow our organizations as we move closer to celebrating 50 years of services to Georgia’s moms and babies, HMHBGA is in search of board members who are passionate about our mission to improve maternal and infant health in our state and situated in a manner to tangibly do so.

If you fall into one or more of the following categories, have a fierce commitment to maternal and infant health and want to get involved by volunteering your talents and serving on our board, contact us today:

  • A parent or community member who can speak to the needs of moms and babies in northern, central and/or south-western Georgia.
  • A CPA, accountant, or bookkeeper, preferably with experience in nonprofit
  • A maternal health clinician with specific knowledge of the health disparities facing marginalized populations in Georgia
  • A researcher with specific knowledge of maternal mental health and/or social emotional development in early childhood
  • A person with skills in event planning and/or fundraising.
  • A person with ties to a large corporation that may be able to facilitate charitable giving and/or corporate sponsorship.
  • A person with strong experience in information technology/operations, preferably with IT systems optimization for a nonprofit organization and/or call center.
  • An entrepreneur or business manager who has successfully started, run and scaled a small business.
  • An experienced holistic care professional, preferably a doula, lactation consultant or childbirth educator

EXPECTATIONS OF THE BOARD AS A WHOLE

As the highest leadership body of the organization and to satisfy its fiduciary duties, the board is responsible for:

  • determining the mission and purposes of the organization
  • selecting and evaluating the performance of the CEO/executive director
  • strategic and organizational planning
  • ensuring strong fiduciary oversight and financial management
  • fundraising and resource development
  • monitoring HMHBGA’S programs and services to ensure they are aligned with the mission and organizational strategic direction
  • enhancing HMHBGA’s public image
  • assessing its own performance as the governing body of HMHBGA

EXPECTATIONS OF INDIVIDUAL BOARD MEMBERS

Each individual board member is expected to:

  • know the organization’s mission, policies, programs, and needs
  • faithfully read and understand the organization’s financial statements
  • serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization and fully engage in identifying and securing the financial/in-kind resources and partnerships necessary for HMHBGA to advance its mission
  • leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to fully achieve HMHBGA’s

mission

  • give a meaningful personal financial donation
  • help identify personal connections that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational

standing, and can influence public policy

  • prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in board meetings
  • participate fully in one or more committees

BOARD MEMBERS ARE ALSO EXPECTED TO:

  • follow the organization’s bylaws, policies, and board resolutions
  • sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it during the year, if necessary, as well as disclose potential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings
  • maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of HMHBGA
