At 389 days in of cycling the globe, after pedaling through 27 countries, Jay Austin, a DC resident, was intentionally and brutally murdered literally while riding his bike on July 29th, 2018 in a terrorist attack in Central Asia, simply because he was an American. He was 29 years old.

To keep Jay's spirit alive and for his philosophies to continue to be inspirational, I, Jay's mom, created The Jay Austin Simply Be Kind Foundation (a 501(c)3 non-profit organization EIN 84-3852918). Our foundation card depicts Jay's image.

Jay was a member of Warmshowers, which is an organization for international cyclists with hosts that provide overnight stays, sometimes more, for cyclists who may find it difficult to wild camp in a particular area, or for whatever reason, need an overnight stay.

I'm a Warmshowers' host. Upon my last couple of occasions hosting, I asked my guests if they wouldn't mind carrying Jay's card with them when cycling, as if Jay is continuing on his journey. They were honored to take the card from me.

This got me thinking .. in a huge way! I want every cyclist worldwide to carry Jay's card. And if anyone who's not a cyclist wants one, so be it. I want this concept to go viral!

There's no cost to anyone but me .. for printing/sending the cards.

One of my volunteers already created a guideline on how we can do this. I need the man/woman power to either implement this concept or I need anyone who's willing to come up with their own ideas on how everyone across the globe can carry Jay's card with them.

I need your help to make this happen. We can do it!!! I want everyone to know Jay Austin and for him to never be forgotten.

And just maybe, while this card is being circulated globally, some will take interest in our foundation/website and implement some good habits for saving our environment and living peacefully with each other.

Mission Statement

Jay Austin, our inspiration, a Washington, DC resident, Georgetown University graduate with a Masters in International Relations, was cycling the world when 389 days out, on July 29th, 2018, in Tajikistan, a country in Central Asia, he and his partner, Lauren, were intentionally targeted and brutally murdered by terrorists, while literally riding their bikes, simply because they were American. Both were 29 years old. In honor of Jay, on January 1st, 2020, The Jay Austin Simply Be Kind Foundation was launched.

Description

Jay was passionate about creating positive change for a myriad of issues encompassing cultural diversity, protecting the environment, minimalism, literacy and nutrition as well as having a love for travel and the great outdoors with a focus on cycling; living life every day to the fullest while respecting our planet. We hope to follow his lead to create a healthier and happier planet for all of us to share and to leave for generations to come.

Our current goals are to create community gardens, a cultural-diverse writing workshop and to follow the Cycling Without Age model, a world-wide program based on volunteer-piloted trishaws for seniors to 'feel the wind in their hair and return from their first ride with rosy cheeks and full of stories'.
