This volunteer opportunity responds to the pressing educational needs of the students in the public school system throughout Greater Boston who are struggling to learn to read and need additional attention in order to achieve. So many students were remote throughout COVID; these children need additional support to offset their lack of classroom learning due to the pandemic. Volunteers have found that students can make significant progress with the help of a tutor weekly.

Mission Statement
JCRC is a coalition of organizations and individuals that represents and advances the values, interests, and priorities of the organized Jewish community in greater Boston. Through our network of agencies, our programs, and our partnerships, we: Serve as a catalyst for building a strong and vibrant Jewish community in Boston and around the world; Advocate for a safe, secure, Jewish, and democratic state of Israel, and; Promote an American society which is democratic, pluralistic, and just.
Description
JCRC envisions a Jewish community that is a regional and national model - in civic engagement, building bridges, and initiating partnerships - in service to Jewish concerns and the collective good.
The Greater Boston Jewish Coalition for Literacy (GBJCL), a program of JCRC, mobilizes the Jewish community to help elementary school children discover the joy of reading by building meaningful relationships with a caring adult.
Through partnerships with synagogues, Jewish community organizations, day schools, and businesses, GBJCL engages volunteers in school-based one-to-one reading tutoring, book drives, and advocacy efforts in high-needs schools.
Participants include "empty nesters," working professionals, at-home parents, retirees, and teens. Volunteers come from all backgrounds and do not need professional training in education nor are they required to be Jewish.
GBJCL is a community engagement effort of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston.
