Volunteering with Santa Barbara Vision Care Program (SBVC) is the perfect opportunity to help those in need while also while also providing yourself with a chance to grow as an individual. When choosing to volunteer with SBVC, you will not be just another volunteer, but a valued member of our team. SEE is passionate about helping low-income and uninsured and underinsured individuals throughout Santa Barbara and Ventura County gain access to eye care. We serve a diverse population and are committed to providing quality vision care to those in-need. We are offering this volunteer opportunity that requires a unique skillset and the ability to grant you the satisfaction knowing you’re helping others. We are looking for passionate, dedicated people who are eager to make positive contributions. Bilingual Spanish a must!

  • The Volunteer Optometry Assistant provides assistive services and support to the Optometrist in the delivery of patient-focused eye care. Balances multiple priorities to complete assigned tasks in a team-oriented environment.


    Essential Responsibilities:

    • Prepares examination and pre-screening rooms by cleaning and setting up equipment and instruments, and stocking and arranging appropriate supplies.
    • Greets and escorts patients to pre-screening, examination, or treatment room and instructs and/or assists patients in preparation for scheduled procedures.
    • Pre-screens patients for vision examination and contact lens visits. Including completion of appropriate case history in relation to chief complaint, past and present ocular history, family history, systemic illness, allergies and medications, visual acuity test, auto-refraction test, auto-keratometry, and pupillary screening.
    • Ability to efficiently manage patient flow to correspond with optometry appointment types and timelines.
    • Performs automated visual fields as directed following established policies and procedures.
    • Assists Optometrist inpatient data documentation as needed and appropriate.
    • Performs routine clerical and reception duties as directed, including filing progress sheets, completing patient visit records, copying, faxing and light typing as required.
    • Establishes and maintains courteous, cooperative relations when interacting with other personnel, and the public.
    • May perform other duties as required.

    Basic Qualifications:

    • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED)
    • Ability to speak Spanish.
    • Ability to conduct recent visual fields, and other vision screening.
    • Optical and vision service background including customer service/retail experience a plus.
    • Ability to demonstrate inter-personal skills, oral and written communication skills; must meet attendance requirements/standards.
    • Ability to efficiently manage patient flow to correspond with optometry appointment types and timelines.

    Primary Location: Goleta, CA

    Hours Per Month - 32-40

    Workdays: Wed-Fri

    Work Hours: Varied between 08:30 AM to 4:30 PM

    Student Volunteer Credits Given

  • morning / 08:30 AM to 11:45 AM
    Can work with the volunteer on the hour requirements
  • 08:30 AM to 04:00 PM
