If you like getting your hands in the dirt AND you still want to see the big picture,
and you are willing to work in cooperation with our LA County Master Gardener (who's also our pastor so has a full-time job),
this may be a great opportunity to help FOOD SUFFICIENCY
and GREEN MANAGEMENT in our urban community of Van Nuys.
We need someone(s) to help take our Community Garden to the next level:
we're putting in drip irrigation for better crop yield and water management.
We have 35 individual plots and 3 teaching areas, plus a small orchard.
We want to help facilitate crop swaps between gardeners,
teach better year-round garden practices,
and we want to reach beyond the garden to our community to teach garden classes, such as Container Gardening and Small Space gardening.
We have some volunteers for the garden that need direction,
and there are volunteers in the garden who need re-direction.
We also need to re-educate existing gardeners about not taking from areas outside their own gardens.
We also want to reach out (over the next few months) to local Scout troops who have Gold and Eagle candidates, as well as other churches and groups seeking projects, to help us renovate the 25+ year old garden fencing and other infrastructure. There are 14 Compost bins that need to be re-set and started again, we have the materials and even some volunteers, we just need someone to lead!
This garden provides critical food support for many families living in poverty,
and the plants represent favorite foods from all across North and South America!
Spanish speaking is a plus, since about 2/3 of our gardeners are native Spanish speakers. However, it is not a requirement.

Description
CENTRAL: A small, energetic community working in English + bilingually to empower our neighbors in Van Nuys through love and grace to be who God has made them to be.
Our vision: We want to be people who accept and live in God's grace, who follow Jesus Christ, and who serve others.
January 1929 Central was a mission outreach & became a vital part of serving a wide range of needs through the depression and post-war Van Nuys. It flourished in the 50's-70's but lost its connection with mission, so dwindled.
NOW, for 15 years, hosted homeless services agencies & opened worship to marginalized folk, experiencing loneliness, disconnectedness, & personal trauma.
TODAY: Core of folks serve both persons experiencing poverty & hunger among the housed neighbors + persons experiencing homelessness.

- If you can give us 5 hours per week and an occasional Saturday, that would be ideal.
- Because physical labor in the garden is involved, you must be able to do some work with garden tools, but more important is your ability to get along with a wide range of personalities.
