Are you looking for a weekly volunteer gig where you can build connections, help families and make a difference? You've found it!

Volunteers are needed on Mondays, Fridays or on weekends to welcome and assist families who are accessing services at the Family Housing Network Day Center at 5050 S. Tacoma Way in Tacoma.

Volunteers work directly with Catholic Community Services staff and client families. Volunteers can build their own scheduled but we are looking for a weekly volunteer commitment.

Ideal volunteer candidates are people who are:

  • Great with kids & families
  • Able to leave judgement at the door
  • Help foster a warm & welcoming environment
  • Understand how to build relationships & make people feel comfortable
  • Care about community
  • Willing to give people a little extra patience and grace (everyone has hard days)
  • Have a good sense of humor & understand that life is hard (humor helps)
Requirements:
  • At least 18 years old (youth 12 and up can accompany parents/guardians)
  • Pass a background check (Washington State Patrol & NSOPW)
  • Have a drivers license or state ID
  • Sign a Covid-19 waiver
  • Attend a volunteer orientation before volunteering
What is Family Housing Network?

Catholic Community Services/Family Housing Network, serves low-income families in Pierce County and military veteran households in King, Pierce, Thurston, Kitsap, Mason, Grays Harbor, Lewis, Cowlitz, Pacific or Wahkiakum counties.

The Family Housing Day Center at 5050 S. Tacoma Way (Tacoma) is a drop-in center for families who are activity experiencing homelessness. The Day Center has restrooms with shower & bath facilities, provides access to free laundry facilities, distributes diapers, has a computer lab, provides meals & has a communal kitchen space where families can cook their own meals. In addition to the services that help make things better in the moment- families can get connected with case managers and coordinated entry to work on establishing long-term housing stability.

Online registrations not really your thing? Email meganed@ccsww.org or call 253-365-4111 to request a volunteer registration packet. Packets can be emailed to you or hard copies can be mailed with a self-addressed/stamped return envelope.

Good to know- All volunteers need to be fully vetted through the Catholic Community Services Volunteer Services program before they can start volunteering. This includes a background check, reference checks and an orientation (usually held at the Day Center and paired with a tour). Masks are available but not required. We do not ask vaccination status.

Description

Volunteer Services provides low-income adults (anyone 18 years old or older) who have temporary or permanent functional disabilities, including those associated with aging. The people we serve can not afford to purchase the kinds of service we provide, do not qualify for assistance from other sources and do not have family or friends available to help them. Service is provided on an as-volunteers-are-available basis. There are never any fees for the services provided.

  • Background Check
  • Must be at least 18
  • Orientation or Training
  • 1-2 volunteers are needed weekly on Mondays and Fridays between 10 am and 5 pm. Some help is also needed on Wednesdays after 12 pm. Shifts are flexible.
  • All volunteers need to be fully vetted through CCS Volunteer Services before they can start. Youth volunteer as young as 12 are allowed to participate with their parents/guardians but our primary need is for volunteers ages 18 and up.
