We are looking for some eager tech help volunteers to help bridge the digital divide for Chinese speaking senior patrons. COVID-19 has amplified the effects of Chinese seniors not being able to connect with their loved ones via technology, and we need you to help us.
If you are Chinese speaking of any dialect (our main focus is on Mandarin, Cantonese, Toishan) and would love to help troubleshoot everyday mobile device or tablet problems like "how to delete photos," or "how to turn on subtitles on YouTube," we would love your help. Chinese reading and input skills are helpful to assist seniors, but NOT required. No need to have advanced tech skills like Photoshop or coding, but just patience with patrons who are still learning.
Chinese Tech Help happens every Wednesday morning (10 a.m. - 12 p.m.) for two hours, with thirty minute simple tech skills sharing run by a librarian at the beginning. The remaining time will be for practicing the tech skills and also troubleshooting individual problems.
All SFPL volunteers will be required to submit proof of vaccination against Covid-19 before commencing volunteer duties. More information and an interest form/application can be found at: bit.ly/sfpl-tt
(If you are not available on Wednesday mornings but are interested in assisting Chinese-speaking elders develop basic tech skills, Community Tech Network is also seeking Mandarin- & Cantonese-speaking Digital Coaches: CommunityTechNetwork.org/volunteer )
