Hospice volunteers know that helping others at the end of their lives is tremendously rewarding. Being part of a hospice team gives you the profound privilege of bringing comfort, peace and care to patients, caregivers, and their families during their transitional journey. As a hospice volunteer, you become part of a person’s life when you are needed most.

People just like you volunteer. Adults, young adults, and in some cases, mature teens from all backgrounds, experiences, and cultures volunteer in hospice. Effective hospice volunteers embrace the fact that their role is one of compassionate service.

UPMC Somerset's In Touch Hospice will provide the training and orientation you need to feel confident and comfortable with whatever level of support you choose to give. Training can include such topics as death and dying, establishing boundaries between the volunteer and the patient/family, and stages of grief.

Ultimately, hospice care is about providing patients, caregivers, and families with the most comfortable and compassionate end-of-life experience possible. Your responsibilities will vary. In many cases it’s as simple as companionship - sitting and talking, just listening, or playing a patient’s favorite music. You may also assist patients with tasks they can no longer perform for themselves. It may include anything from light household chores to lending emotional support to the patient's family during this difficult time.

If you prefer to work in a different capacity, we also have opportunities to help with administrative office tasks such as file creation, front desk reception, or greeting card writing.

Mission Statement

UPMC Somerset's In Touch Hospice is a non-profit organization committed to high quality end-of-life care for our community. We have served Somerset County and the surrounding area since 1983. Our clients make their own health care decisions based on their specific personal and family needs. Hospice focuses on achieving an end-of-life characterized by grace, dignity, comfort, or peace of mind. Inherent in hospice care is the ongoing learning about care giving, the disease process, and the options and interventions needed to relieve pain and other discomforts.

What is hospice?
When medical care cannot offer a cure, hospice provides care, comfort, and support for persons with terminal conditions as well as their families. The hospice team works to make the person comfortable and relieve the symptoms and pain of their illness.
Why choose UPMC Somerset's In Touch Hospice?
Hospice care is a family-centered team approach that includes a doctor, nurse, social worker, counselor, chaplain, hospice aide, and trained volunteers. They work together focusing on the dying person's needs - physical, emotional, social, and spiritual. The goal is to help keep the person as pain and symptom-free as possible while offering spiritual and supportive counseling to the patient and family members. In Touch Hospice offers patients and their family the option for short term use in our inpatient hospice facility or have care in the privacy of their own home. As a registered not-for-profit hospice provider, we believe our primary role is to care for the community, one family at a time.
