Overview of position: Visitor Services volunteers are the first people to welcome visitors to the Willamette Heritage Center. Volunteers in this role provide helpful information about our site and services, coordinate self-guided tours of our fourteen historic structures, and facilitate admission and merchandise sales at the museum store. Additional tasks may include answering phones, gathering visitor information, and updating store inventory, as necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Greet visitors and orient them to the site
  • Answer general questions about the museum, research library and archive, textile learning center, and retail shops
  • Check in tour groups and complete daily admissions paperwork
  • Provide tour information and explain visitor procedures
  • Operate the cash register and answer phone calls
  • Promote museum membership, signature events, and programs
  • Keep track of merchandise sales and store traffic
  • Maintain visitor information brochures
  • Assist with projects as needed - mailings, store inventory, data entry etc.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Able to listen to and communicate with people of diverse backgrounds, education levels, and ages
  • Able to maintain a calm, pleasant, and cheerful demeanor while working with visitors
  • Able to learn tour information, store operation processes, and organizational policies
  • Dependable and punctual
  • Self-directed and willing to take initiative
  • Must present a professional appearance
  • Must pass a criminal background check
  • Willing to follow Willamette Heritage Center rules and procedures

The Willamette Heritage Center connects generations by preserving and interpreting the history of the Mid-Willamette Valley.

Description

The Willamette Heritage Center is a non-profit museum in downtown Salem, Oregon devoted to telling meaningful stories about the past that connect the Willamette Heritage Center's unique historical site and resources to the region's diverse communities.

Fourteen historic structures in downtown Salem, Oregon house permanent and changing exhibits, a research library and archive, textile learning center, and rentable event spaces. The five-acre campus is also home to retail shops, art galleries, cooperative artist studios, and offices run by our partner organizations.

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday 10am - 4pm. Library and Archives are open by appointment. Facilities closed major holidays.
