Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska, Inc.(LFS) welcomes many refugees to Nebraska every year. LFS relies on volunteer involvement to welcome newly arriving refugee families into the community. The ability for community volunteers to prepare a home for newly arriving refugee families is vital to their success upon arrival. Entering a fully furnished home is not only a gift of welcome, but it also allows families to spend their budget on rental assistance, medical care, and transportation among other things. Whether it is a family of 4 or 14 the impact you will have lasts a lifetime! Co-sponsorship often leads to lifelong friendships through ongoing mentorship and community guidance.

Co-sponsorship is a volunteer opportunity that helps refugee families with the basic needs to succeed as they resettle into their new community. Co-sponsors will be responsible for furnishing housing units, collecting household supplies, purchasing groceries, and supplying any other necessary items for newly arriving refugee families. Complete co-sponsorship is best done in groups, but the opportunity is open for partial co-sponsorship from individuals. If you are unable to support a refugee family by supplying all of the items for the home, there may be opportunities to team up with other interested individuals to form co-sponsorship teams!

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 19 years of age
  • Must be flexible as changes arise
  • Must comply with all LFS policies and procedures
  • Must have an understanding of cultural and religious differences and boundaries
  • Must attend orientation and training
