About PEOPLE PROGRAM

Location:

2240 LAKESHORE DR, NEW ORLEANS, LA 70122, US

Mission Statement

The People Program is on of the ministries of the Sisters of St. Joseph whose mission is rooted in the mission of Jesus Christ, the same mission which continually unfolds in His church, "That all may be one as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; I pray that they may be one in Us." (John 17:21). Within this broader mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph, People Program brings together senior adults who share in community their experiences, talents, wisdom, and knowledge with each other. The retirees themselves, as volunteer teachers, take leadership in facilitating this sharing by offering classes holistic in scope: spiritual, aesthetic, intellectual, and physical. It is hoped that individuals in the environment of holistic learning and personal interaction will develop the qualities of self-esteem and inner peace so necessary for coping with difficulties in later years. People Program is dedicated to this goal.

Description

People Program offers creative and intellectual activities which contribute to renewed self-esteem and sense of well being for seniors 50 and above.

The program has grown from its modest beginning of 35 persons in early 1974 to more than 500 today with over 100 volunteer teachers and assistants. We have also expanded from our original location in Gentilly to our Lakeshore Dr. site (main campus) and added a satellite location on the West Bank. This growth is attributed to the favorable reception of participants and their enthusiastic commentary to friends and relatives.

The program presently offers over 100 classes, four days each week at the Lakeshore campus and three days at our Westbank location. All teachers and instructors are volunteers who are interested in sharing their knowledge in a relaxed atmosphere where community building is as essential as skill development. Truly remarkable is the steadfast interest of participants and teachers alike.
