We are seeking a female volunteer (preferably Spanish-speaking, but not necessary) to mentor an 18-year-old refugee from Mexico who lives in a foster home in Grand Haven. Her case manager shared, "This youth moved into her foster home at the end of May. She has done very well there and loves her foster family, and they adore her. English is a barrier for her, but she is trying to learn. She has a lot of strengths and has a great personality. She is so fun to be around and is quick to laugh and smile. She doesn’t eat meat. She likes to play basketball, go on walks, crafts, being silly, and just hanging out. She loves to take pictures on her phone of pretty much everything.

Background: This youth experienced physical and verbal abuse from her father, as well as interpersonal violence between her parents. She worked as a child selling bread on the streets. She decided to make the trip to the border for a better life.

Mission Statement

Bethany demonstrates the love and compassion of Jesus Christ by protecting children, empowering youth, and strengthening families through quality social services.

Description

For refugees fleeing danger, the search for safety can be extremely challenging. And too often, people become numbers in a system that can feel impossible to navigate. That’s why we guide, protect, advocate for, and support refugees. In the U.S., we offer resettlement and continued support services in strategic locations.

Bethany Christian Services' Refugee and Immigrant Services program encompasses adult and family resettlement as well as refugee foster care for Unaccompanied Children and Unaccompanied Refugee Minors. Our services for unaccompanied refugee youth include case management, counseling, housing (foster homes, group homes, independent living), classes (New Arrival, Life Skills, driver's training), and volunteer mentoring and tutoring.
