About INDEPENDENCE NORTHWEST CENTER FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING OF NORTHWEST CT

Location:

1183 NEW HAVEN ROAD, NAUGATUCK, CT 06770, US

Mission Statement

The Independent Living Movement redefined disability as a personal attribute that characterizes an individual but does not define them. The Independent Living Movement called for people with disabilities to be in control of their lives and services that they receive. The Independent Living Movement no longer saw the disability as the problem that needed to be cured or managed, but rather located the problem in barriers that needed to be removed in order for all people with disabilities to enjoy the same opportunities and responsibilities as non-disabled citizens. The Rehabilitation Act of 1978, as amended, established Centers for Independent Living throughout the nation. Independence Northwest opened its doors in 1988.

Description

Independence Northwest is the result of an exciting, innovative and successful movement for people with disabilities that began in the early 1970’s and is now represented by over 400 organizations nationwide. Our organization, and the other centers that advocate the independent living model, are fundamentally different from other providers that serve people with disabilities because we approach the situation in an entirely new way. We have been serving persons with disabilities living in northwestern Connecticut since our inception in 1988.
