The area we serve is underprivileged and a large percentage of the population are senior citizens, female head households and or non-family households where many cases of food insecurity go unreported. The long neglected and disparaged African American communities of female, senior citizen and non-family led households not receiving SNAP benefits, living at or below the poverty line in the Historical Communities of Newtown, live in a constant state of habitually faltering fresh food options leading to long term health issues like diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and heart defects that have been exacerbated by the trauma left behind from Covid-19. Food security gardens are critically needed to fill this glaring void. This is an opportunity to construct raised brick beds for our community garden, teach our staff a lifelong skill in maintaining our beds and be the change you want to see.
