Volunteer Position Description

Home Of Refuge Outreach Inc is a 501(c)3, nonprofit Homeless shelter located in Eden, NC. HORO serves Rockingham County, NC. Home Of Refuge Outreach Inc is seeking a self-sufficient, dependable and motivated volunteer who can work with us to make our shelter more efficient and neighbor friendly.

This person would sign up for shifts on the days and hours of their choice. We would like to prioritize the busiest times which are Monday- Sunday from 5 pm to 11pm and from 11pm to 8 pm and some day shift hours. This person will help our neighbors as they come through the door. Neighbors will be directed to the right area, be given sign in sheets depending on service and be provided paperwork to start while they wait in line. With experience, the shelter host will be expected to help answer common shelter questions as they can

In this role you will:

  • Learn common shelter policies and procedures in order to best assist neighbors Greet neighbors and find out what service they are looking for and guide them to the correct agencies that may help.
  • Maintain an organized clipboard of common paperwork to allow neighbors to have all information filled out.
  • Answer general questions, walk neighbors through paperwork.

Responsibilities

  • Establish a schedule that will work for both your own needs and the shelter.
  • Be timely and dependable for the shifts you sign up for. Communicate any schedule changes.
  • Read through policies, procedures and common paperwork to make sure you are providing correct information.
  • Use good customer service skills to help make the experience more efficient and enjoyable for neighbors.
  • Ask questions for any information you may not know, make sure to provide only correct information.
  • As you grow in your comfort of the role you may be asked to help with other duties as assigned such as:
    • Assisting with getting neighbors' information into the HMIS database.
    • General cleaning in the office area.
    • Putting donations away in their correct location.
    • Doing general paperwork or administrative tasks.

Qualifications

  • Over the age of 18
  • Dependable with good organization, time management and communication skills
  • Ability to work autonomously and efficiently
  • CPR/First Aid Certification (will train)
  • Willing to learn new things and apply that knowledge
  • Food prep and serving skills - helpful
