ORGANIZATION: Crisis Text Line

Did you know that only 5.5% of mental health services are administered in Spanish?

That’s why Crisis Text Line is launching the first crisis-response service of its kind in the United States, providing free, 24/7 support for Spanish speakers via text message. And, you can be part of it all.

Currently, Crisis Text Line supports about 4,000 people in crisis daily in English. Research shows that language is a primary barrier preventing Spanish speakers in the US from accessing mental health services. We’re excited to launch our service with your support in order to increase access to mental health services for the Latine community.

Words hold power. They can unite, inspire, comfort, and heal. As a volunteer Crisis Counselor, you can use your words to support people in their moments of pain. Join us to launch this service as a bilingual volunteer Crisis Counselor and provide mental health support for Spanish-speaking texters all across the country.


What is the process for becoming a Crisis Counselor?

Step 1: Fill out an application at crisistextline.org/words

Step 2: Consent to a background check

Step 3: Take a quick language assessment

Step 3: Complete a web-based training that is led by a Crisis Counselor Coach

Step 4: Take your first shift and start supporting people in crisis!

This is also a unique opportunity to build something with us and for your community! You'll learn and develop your skills in active listening, collaborative problem solving, and crisis management all from the comfort of your home (these skills can help in your personal relationships too!). Many of our Crisis Counselors also highlight Training and their volunteer experience on their resumes and LinkedIn profiles.
