Organization Description:
The City Tutors is a volunteer tutoring and mentoring organization with a dual mission: close gaps in academic support and professional development services within historically underserved communities across New York City, and empower more New Yorkers to get involved through tutoring and mentoring. Our vision is to create a hub where any New Yorker can leverage their academic and professional skills and content knowledge to uplift their community and where disadvantaged communities can access resources that they need.
With partnerships across the city, we are able to effectively leverage the expertise of our community of volunteer tutors, as tutors provide academic support in disciplines such as history, science, literacy, and math, among others, to students aged 5-65. Tutors are trained in effective tutoring practices, choose locations where they would like to work and receive guidance and assistance from a tutor trainer as needed.
We offer our volunteer tutors the opportunity to connect with various industry professionals for a 4 to 6 month mentorship. Tutors get their professional documents reviewed, and learn more about a particular industry/job title, while they serve the community. Additionally, given the job insecurity and job loss that New Yorkers are facing in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have decided to offer all New Yorkers some of our professional development services (i.e. resume and cover letter revision assistance) and when appropriate and possible, informational sessions with industry professionals. All of our mentors have completed their undergraduate degree, and have at least 2 years of work experience. On average, our current mentors have at least 12 years work experience.
We see the City Tutors as an opportunity to bring people together under a common purpose. We want like-minded individuals to feel they are part of a fellowship, to build their network with people within their discipline, and to expand the disciplines and industries they've been exposed to.

Description
Our vision is to create a hub where any New Yorker can leverage their academic and professional skills and content knowledge to uplift their community and where disadvantaged communities can access resources that they need.
We see tutoring as a way to empower individuals to work in the community. We provide flexible times, convenient locations, and meaningful experiences, allowing more community members to participate and to support community partners for longer.
We believe tutoring must be a reflective act that both helps strengthen individuals' support of others and helps individuals better understand themselves. We provide our tutors with access to industry mentors who help connect the work they are doing with us with what they've done in the past and what they want to do in the future.
We believe in leveraging the workforce skills of our community of volunteers by pairing those in need of professional support with industry experts who can provide insight into specific fields and feedback on professional documents.
We see the City Tutors as an opportunity to bring people together under a common purpose. We want like-minded individuals to feel they are part of a fellowship, to build their network with people within their discipline, and to expand the disciplines and industries they've been exposed to.
