COVID-19 has impacted many small businesses. Setting up financial systems, bookkeeping, and reading financial statements are essential for a small business but can be daunting and scary at first! That’s where you come in! As a financial volunteer, you can offer one-on-one advice to an entrepreneur during 1 hour virtual consultation(s).

  • Are you a good fit? This virtual volunteer opportunity is for you if you have experience working with business finances in accounting, information systems (Point of Sale, bookkeeping, etc.), or managing your own business' finances. Volunteers must be located in the United States.
  • What will you be doing? Once approved as a volunteer, we will connect you with an entrepreneur or several (depending on your availability) to set up virtual consultations. During this time, you will teach the entrepreneur about systems and structures that can help them monitor and analyze their business - for e.g. using bookkeeping systems, understanding P&Ls.
  • What is the time commitment? 1-2 consultations with an entrepreneur, 1 hour each (plus preparation time prior to the consultation) to fit into your schedule. This can be a one-time opportunity or ongoing if you would like it!
  • Do we provide resources to get started? We provide videos and additional resources to help you get started.

Our mission is to help under-resourced entrepreneurs create thriving businesses in underserved areas so owners can build wealth for themselves, their families and their communities. We do this by activating a network of top-tier professional volunteers like you to deliver pro-bono legal, financial and marketing services, personally nurturing each business owner’s success.


Start Small Think Big is a non-profit organization founded 11 years ago in New York City.

Over the past few years, we have successfully expanded our work to San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose. We are now in the midst of another period of rapid growth and expansion, as we work to replicate our model nationally and grow existing programs to serve larger numbers of entrepreneurs.

We work with entrepreneurs who are of color, women, members of under-resourced groups, and/or low-income - with business revenues under $1M. Services are delivered across three core programmatic areas: the legal program, the financial program, and the marketing program.
