reDiscover Center is an arts and environmental nonprofit promoting resource conservation, creativity, and community engagement through hands-on learning with sustainable materials.

Program Description: Cardboard City is one of reDiscover Center’s biggest programs ever. We aim to serve 50,000-100,000 visitors over 32 days of operation with a team of 5 staff supported by 10 volunteers each day. This is a great opportunity to volunteer with your friends! Cardboard City celebrates all things cardboard, from kids playing in boxes to 12’ sculptures by professional artists.

We are looking for volunteers to facilitate visitors’ experiences in this free 10,000 sf art gallery and activity center. A materials prep volunteer role is available for those who do not wish to work directly with the public. This program is located at 1231 Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. There is plentiful paid public parking in Downtown Santa Monica. This location is three blocks from the Expo Line.

Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities: Work directly with the public to facilitate positive experience with art and artmaking for youth and adults. General roles for this volunteer opportunity include the following:

  • Greeter
  • Exhibit Assistant
  • Activity Assistant
  • Event Assistant
  • Materials prep (no contact with the public)

reDiscover Center makes all efforts to match volunteers’ interests and skills with the tasks needed in this large event setting.

Our opportunities range from short-term tasks like managing donated materials, and helping out our activities booth at local Farmers Markets and Festivals, to longer-term commitments like working with kids on a regular basis during Tinkering Club and camp.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 14
  • Orientation or Training
  • We have individual and group volunteering opportunities in 4 and 7 hour shifts daily Thursday - Sunday July 8 - August 29 and internships for high school and college students who can make a 100 hour commitment. All volunteers receive
  • Closed toe shoes, clothing that can get dirty. Branded aprons will be provided. Masking and other Covid-19 Safety Protocols must be followed. Covid-19 vaccination is highly recommended.
