ESF Committee at Butterfly 2019

We are seeking volunteers who care about disadvantaged middle schooler's access to our tutoring/mentorship SEA Program, which serves those who are less fortunate and are failing or at risk of failing their classes with no recourse. You will join our committee to participate in all related to plan and prepare for our fundraiser events. You can take on as much as little as possible, depending on your availability and schedule. We present two very different fundraising events each year (in addition to other, smaller fundraisers). One is slated for November 14, 2021, and the other for April, 2022 (date TBD, possibly the 21st). The November event will be outdoors at Alumni Park, Pepperdine university. It is open to the entire Malibu and LA community, and is suitable for all ages. It is an afternoon event, that is positive and fun! We would like committee members to help with the planning and execution of this event, taking on various responsibilities for the event to run as smoothly as possible. In addition, committee members help promote the event to maximize participation and results. More will be explained when initial contact is made, to ensure that the volunteer is clear on the opportunity and can decide if they want to join a great team of caring, committed people who believe in our mission. The April event will be an evening event, with a limited invitation list that will require tickets, etc. It is our gala fundraiser of the year, and will need to be reinvented this year as the venue used previously is no longer hosting events.

Mission Statement

To provide tutoring and mentors to at-risk middle school students in the greater Los Angeles area.

Founded by her family following her tragic murder at the age of 13 on April 3, 2010, the nonprofit charity Emily Shane Foundation's SEA (Successful Educational Achievement) Program provides mentor/tutors to at-risk youth at various sites across Los Angeles and Ventura counties as an after school Program. In 2016, the SEA Program supported over 90 students with one-on-one support. Our goal is to serve those middle school students who risk failure and could not otherwise afford this type the intensive and individual academic support we provide. Our mentors help thier students to acquire the tools and skills needed to perform to their best academic potential. SEA studens are those who are "falling through the cracks". We aim to direct them away from the negative repercussions that often result from poor academic performance, such as gang affiliation, drug use, low self esteem, acting out, bullying or being bullied, etc.
