We are seeking volunteers who care about our mission in empowering underserved, disadvantaged middle schooler's at sites across LA in need of our nonprofit charity's tutoring/mentorship SEA (Successful Educational Achievement) Program. SEA Program participants , which serves are at risk of failing their classes and could not otherwise afford this essential support. As a member of the Emily Shane Foundation event committee, you will participate to your desired degree of involvement with planning and preparing for our twice yearly fundraiser events. You can take on as much as little as possible, depending on your availability and schedule. We present two very different fundraising events each year. This year, one will be in the fall and will consist of a one week long silent auction, a sponsorship campaign to raise funds to sponsor students and an exclusive, ticketed wine pairing event the evening of Thursday, 11/3. The other, "Wings Over Malibu" (our symbol is a butterfly) is the evening of Thursday, April 27th, 2023. It has a limited invitation list that will require tickets, etc. It is our gala fundraiser of the year.

Note: you can help remotely, as our meetings are held via Zoom. It would be ideal if the volunteer can come to Malibu for the events to help out when it is taking place, and possibly be able to be present physically to help with wrapping auction items in baskets, etc. as the event draws close. We are open to whatever is possible!!

Mission Statement

To provide tutoring and mentors to at-risk middle school students in the greater Los Angeles area.

Description

Founded by her family following her tragic murder at the age of 13 on April 3, 2010, the nonprofit charity Emily Shane Foundation's SEA (Successful Educational Achievement) Program provides mentor/tutors to at-risk youth at various sites across Los Angeles and Ventura counties as an after school Program. In 2016, the SEA Program supported over 90 students with one-on-one support. Our goal is to serve those middle school students who risk failure and could not otherwise afford this type the intensive and individual academic support we provide. Our mentors help thier students to acquire the tools and skills needed to perform to their best academic potential. SEA studens are those who are "falling through the cracks". We aim to direct them away from the negative repercussions that often result from poor academic performance, such as gang affiliation, drug use, low self esteem, acting out, bullying or being bullied, etc.
