The Rural Communities Resource Center (RCRC) is a community-based, community-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit located in Orosi, Tulare County in the California Central Valley. We were founded by and for farmers, agricultural workers and rural residents to address the economic plight of our rural communities through the creation and development of cooperatives. RCRC has several projects to involve volunteers:
1. Food, Our Right! (FOR): Every Friday throughout the year, FOR provides free food to all rural residents never asking for ID, income paperwork or immigration status. Come to help us unload food containers, bag food, distribute food bags and do continuing community outreach.
2. Filipino Farmers Cooperative (FFC): Today, the Orosi-Cutler area is home to the last surviving Filipino farming community in the United States. The FFC is a farmer-cooperative who farm traditionally growing the seeds of the Homeland. For those who want to learn traditional cultivation methods and ancient agrarian practices, volunteer to work alongside a Filipino farmer. Our marketing arm is the:
3. Filipino CSA (Community Supported Agriculture): We work in partnership with the Pilipino Workers Center of SoCal and other Filipino community centers and organization to distribute our produce & food products. We use the DNA Smart approach to ensure good health for our people. We grow for our People, not for the profit-driven market.
4. Farm Animal Sanctuary - The abandonment, abuse and neglect of animals, particularly dogs, is a huge and widespread issue in our rural communities. Please join us in our activities to comfort, aid and help re-home abandoned dogs. We are working to one day establish a training center to have dogs join us as partners for farmer and agricultural workers in the day-to-day work of a farm. We are also seeking shepherds & those wanting to learn about caring for our herd of sheep and goats.

Mission Statement

The Rural Communities Resource Center (RCRC) was established as a ground-up organization to create farmer and worker cooperatives in rural communities. It is this approach that has been proven to be the most viable path in addressing the widespread & entrenched poverty characterizing many farming & rural communities in our country today.

Description

RCRC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit situated in the farming community of Orosi in northern Tulare County. Like many rural towns in the California Central Valley, economic disparity is at its most stark: Agribusiness continues to post billion-dollar profits while agricultural workers continue to be the lowest paid labor force in our country. The founding members of RCRC came together to determine what the best course was to take to turn this difficult situation around. Since RCRC's founding members are Mexican and Filipino; the route of building cooperatives came instinctively and naturally since almost all immigrated from the Philippines and Mexico where cooperatives are both popular and widespread, particularly within the rural areas. At present, RCRC's goal is to organize weekly night-markets as a means to assist its farmers to sell their produce locally and workers to showcase & sell their handicrafts, food products and other items. Participants in these nightly markets will enable RCRC to develop the nucleus of both farmer and rural worker cooperatives in our local area.
