"I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard and valued; when they can give and receive without judgement and when they derive substance and strength from the relationship." Brene Brown

Making a new friend is one of the simplest ways to cultivate human connection. If you are seeking friendship, storytelling, listening and sharing with a new friend, consider applying to be part of the Hillsboro Community Senior Center Pen-Pal Program. This program is designed to pair you with someone with compatible interests and encourages you to share stories, ask questions and genuinely connect with one another in a safe and supportive environment. Priority is given to participants over age 55.

All participants are required to write one letter per month to their pen-pal. Their letter must be mailed between the 1 st and 10 th of each month. You will receive a self-addressed, stamped envelope with every letter you receive. This SASE is to be used to mail your next letter. To protect your privacy and to ensure correspondences remain safe and respectful, all letters will be screened by staff and forwarded on to participants. Chosen participants must complete a short training and agree to a program code of conduct.

Applications for the July - December 2021 cohort are now open. To apply, visit: Senior Center Pen Pal Application or call 503-615-1090. Applications must be received no later than June 15 th.

Accommodations are available for participants who prefer to type and e-mail their letters, who need support with transcription and/or reading of their letters and for individuals who may need translation.
