The Newark Chess Club is a 501(c)3 tax exempt mentorship program founded in 2009 in Newark, New Jersey. Our mission is to transform lives by building critical thinking skills and character in children. We use chess as the bonding activity to build a lasting relationship between a mentor and mentee, and we use chess as a methodological guide and a pedagogical technique to teach children how to make better decisions. Our goal is to 1) teach every child in our program how to play chess, 2) for each child to benefit from the life skills that chess teaches, and 3) to make sure that every child in our program has a mentor.
The Newark Chess Club is looking for chess enthusiasts (and a few chess masters) but more so, we are looking for young professionals, middle aged professionals and anyone from the golden era who has the availability and desire to be a mentor for our youth. We welcome the opportunity to partner with large organizations to reward mentors for their service. Our program runs during the early afternoon, generally right after school dismissals, so we are looking for volunteers who can be available between 3pm and 6pm. Our goal is for our students to learn the game of chess, but the relationship with their mentor is what we hope the students remember forever.
