Take Stock In Children. The most important part of the TSIC program is mentoring. Every TSIC scholar has a trained adult mentor. Mentors are recruited from the community, undergo a security check, and participate in an initial training session. Subsequently, mentors receive a newsletter and an additional on-line "Lunch and Learn" workshop opportunity every month during the school year.
Mentors are asked to visit students once a week at school, usually during lunch. While the mentors come from all walks of life, they all believe in the transformative power of education and in their own ability to make a difference.
Other adults also provide formal support to the TSIC scholars. Every school that is home to a TSIC scholar has at least one school advocate who works with the students at that school. School advocates coordinate TSIC activities, set up conferences, oversee mentor visits, and communicate with Foundation staff. Foundation staff members provide support to individuals and groups as needed. Staff members coordinate student meetings, the Christmas store, the arts festival, and student participation in other events. As well, staff members work with students, teachers, families, and mentors on an as-needed basis to solve problems.
Visit with student only on school grounds, school day, school year. Be a friend, role model, advocate.
