The Communities In Schools of Federal Way Mentor Program recruits volunteer mentors from the community and matches them with students in grades 6-12 based on key interests and other criteria. Mentors meet with students for 45-60 minutes per week at the student's school during the school day. Since it is during the school day, mentors need to be able to meet with a mentee between the hours of 8-2:45 for middle school and 7:15 - 2:10 for high school.
The primary goal of mentoring is to provide the student with support and encouragement. In order to do this, mentors show a sincere interest in the success of the student and establish a caring relationship.
Mentors must be able to meet with a student for 45-60 minutes once a week at the student's school during the school year. A minimum of one year commitment is required, but mentors are welcome to continue year after year if they choose! An application (which includes a WA State Patrol background check, National Sex Offender Registry check and three reference checks), a 1.5 hour New Mentor Training and 15 minute Mentor Interview are required to be completed prior to meeting with a student.
