The School Based mentoring program takes place in the aftercare program of the Shelby County Schools. The volunteers meet one-on-one with their assigned mentee in a designed supervised area of the school. The mentor work with the child on key goals that are geared to assist the child in key areas including academics, attendance and social skills. They must commit to a mentoring relationship for one year and meet with the child for one hour one day per week during the school year. The mentor must complete training, background check, reference check and processing.

The mentors for this program can be high school seniors or juniors. In addition, the mentors can be 18 years of age or older with a schedule that will allow them to mentor during the after school hours.
