ORGANIZATION: MORGAN DUKE CONSERVATION SOCIETY

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Place: The 5,550-acre Hudson River Special Management Area, also known as the Hudson River Recreation Area, or sometimes simply Buttermilk, is located on the eastern shore of the Hudson River in the Lake George Wild Forest. The unit had hiking trails and hand launches and provides many accessible facilities for people with mobility disabilities including accessible campsites, pit privies, and trails.

Buttermilk in Lake Luzerne is facing many challenges including garbage throughout the area. Since 2014 Morgan Duke Conservation Society has a Steward there overseeing more than 15 volunteers helping to pick up litter along the trails including Darling’s Ford and the Bear Slides and inside of campsites and along the road. Volunteers who visit the area on their own time can pick up garbage. There are no set number of hours that you have to work, no set schedules, and no minimum number of times that you have to volunteer.

After major holiday’s the Steward creates public clean up events the community is invited to help pick up litter throughout the area. Once a year the Steward create a tree planting event where the community is welcome to plant trees throughout the area along with the foresters.

Volunteers are asked to fill out a volunteer form. Questions about volunteering can be sent to James Sullivan the Steward at James.Sullivan571@gmail.com.

Many of these projects are carried out in the same Hudson River Recreation Area that first gave James Sullivan the vision for the Morgan Duke Conservation Society.

Specifically, some of the projects we work on are:

Reforestation, and other replanting projects to replace vegetation harmed by human footfalls;
Providing duck nest boxes and other types of birdhouses;
