The Hospice Direct Care Volunteer provides support to patients living with a terminal illness, in addition to their caregivers and family. Support is provided in a variety of ways, including companionship, socialization and caregiver relief. There is no medical background needed - our Hospice volunteers do not interact with the patient in any medical or personal hygiene capacity (i.e. volunteers do not give baths, get the patient in/out of bed, or to/from the bathroom, give medication).
Some examples of what a Direct Care Volunteer has the opportunity to do:
- Provide companionship
- Socialization and/or support to hospice patients and their families/caregivers
- Reading to the patient
- Playing games
- Writing letters to or on behalf of the patient
- Assisting with light household duties (watering plants, walking pets, washing dishes, emptying and taking out the garbage, etc.

Hospice is compassionate care and comfort toward the end of life. Ask any of our patients, and they’ll likely tell you the volunteers who visit them touch their hearts. They look forward to the visits and the compassionate caring volunteers bring. If you have a passion for caring for others and are looking for a way to make a difference in people’s lives, consider becoming a hospice volunteer. What Does a Hospice Volunteer Do? The activities you will do may be many and varied: from reading at a patient’s bedside, knitting lap blankets, running errands, helping with administrative duties, and providing emotional support for the patient/family such as providing breaks for family and friend caregivers. Don't Worry About Training! Becoming a Hospice Volunteer can feel like a big step, and we’re here to help. That’s why we support all our volunteers with an orientation and training program that helps you know what to do. Who Can Volunteer? It’s our philosophy that Hospice Volunteers are part of our caregiver team. To maintain quality care for our patients and families, we have a few requirements of our hospice volunteers such as a background check, references, a statement of health and a commitment to serve for 1 -4 hours a week for six months.
