Job purpose/goal

  • The Community Literature Initiative (CLI) is seeking an Assistant Grant Writer to join our Grants and Donations team. In this role, you will assemble and submit grant requests, establish and maintain personal contact and relationships with foundations, conduct prospect research, and maintain a calendar of submissions and other deadlines. You will write and submit Letters of Inquiry (LOIs), grant proposals, and grant reports to private, corporate, and government funders.
  • You will, in partnership with the other Assistant Grant Writers, play a key role in persuasively communicating CLI’s mission and programs to potential funders. Reporting to the Grant Manager, you will pursue grants and donations that will build a foundation of support for CLI’s operational needs.
  • You will, in partnership with the other Assistant Grant Writers, coordinate fundraising campaigns and fundraising events as needed.
  • Goals: To work with Grants Team members to 1) apply for $400,000 in grant funds for the Fiscal year 2021 in alignment with the 80/20 Campaign which seeks to ensure 80% of every student’s tuition costs are subsidized; and to 2) create and submit two grant proposals every month.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Research and identify available grant opportunities and evaluate in accordance to the operational and financial needs of CLI
  • Establish and maintain personal contact and relationships with foundation contacts and program officers
  • Create and submit Letters of Inquiry and full grant proposals for private foundation, corporate, and government funders; persuasively communicating the organization’s mission and programs
  • Work interdepartmentally with other staff and volunteers to report invoicing, budget accounting, grant reporting, and other administrative functions to ensure successful execution of grant process
  • Update calendars related to grants, contracts, reporting and fundraising events
  • Compile and prepare detailed reports and presentation materials for the funding board meetings, as well as attend necessary meetings

Qualifications

The ideal candidate possesses the following:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite, G Suite, Asana, and ability to learn additional software programs
  • Experience with prospect research, online grant databases, and grant writing
  • Excellent command over writing, analytical, and research skills
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, team player mentality
  • Interest in any of the following: poetry, creative writing, grant writing

Working conditions

Currently, the Assistant Grant Writer position is virtual. 10 hours per week, with 1 hour meeting on Saturday.

CLI is a small Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization that is dedicated to uplifting the voices of people in marginalized communities by providing accessible poetry and literature resources. Within CLI, the Sims Library of Poetry aims to engage with the South L.A. community by offering a space to read, write, study, perform, and appreciate poetry. And the World Stage Press (WSP) is an independent publishing press that edits, designs, and publishes local manuscripts. WSP oversees and manages full-cycle book production, publishing, and local distribution.
