Hearth at Burroughs Street is in need of a regular volunteer to pickup and drop-off weekly groceries. The person will report first to Hearth at Burroughs Street to grab the Costco card and credit card to pay for the food. The food is on weekly order so the volunteer only needs to report to the service desk at Costco, you do not need to shop the aisles. Hearth at Burroughs Street is in Jamaica Plain and Costco is in Dedham.

  • Access to your own vehicle
  • Large storage space in vehicle/large vehicle
  • Willing and able to drive to and from Roxbury to Everett (about 20 minutes).
  • Able to lift up to 30lb/ load and unload a large amount of groceries, without bags. (Costco does not bag items, they are piled in boxes).
  • Must pass (or have otherwise approved) CORI (background) check
  • Valid driver's license needed
  • Available on a regular basis

Opportunity is on weekday mornings - early afternoon position. Person can choose Monday - Thursday but hours cannot go into the afternoon. Fridays & weekends are unavailable.

Please keep in mind that this is a volunteer position; mileage and time are not paid.

Hours are tracked and can be submitted for various needs, however preference is going to a volunteer who can commit long term, rather than individuals looking for semester hours on a shorter term basis.

Hearth is a non-profit organization dedicated to the elimination of homelessness among the elderly. This mission is accomplished through a unique blend of prevention, placement, and housing programs all designed to help elders find and succeed in homes of their own. To this end, all housing operated by Hearth provides a creative array of supportive services that assist residents to age with dignity, regardless of their special medical, mental health, or social needs. Hearth believes these goals are best accomplished through respect for elders and staff, with the desire to see both achieve their highest degree of potential.


Hearth, Inc. operates 174 units of permanent housing for formerly homeless elders at six residential sites throughout Greater Boston. The essence of Hearth's Housing Model is the integration of interdisciplinary services at each residence:

  • Housing
  • Mental Health Care
  • Health Services
  • Social Services

The Outreach Program works with over 325 elders each year, helping them find and succeed in homes of their own.

Hearth's National Initiative focus on raising awareness about the crisis of elder homelessness and promoting Hearth's Housing Model and Outreach Program as the solution.
