Artists and volunteers needed! Two artists in residence at Locust Projects, Tal Amitai-Lavi and Tal Frank, are seeking volunteers for a large-scale installation. The installation, Homeline, is inspired by the architectural structures of Locust Projects’ Main Gallery. The work is composed of three domestic elements created out of unexpectedly weightless materials, including light and delicately-installed nylon strings- a window that separates the space, a projected carpet, and a slowly flowing curtain. You can read more about the exhibition and artists here: https://locustprojects.org/exhibitions/main-gallery/homeline.html

Volunteers will assist the artists directly with fabricating the meticulously-created large-scale curtain aspect of this installation, which involves threading thousands of nylon strings through hanging hardware. Adult volunteers of any age and gender identity are encouraged to apply - no previous artmaking experience needed. Volunteers must be able to sit for extended periods of time and be excited about meticulous, quiet work bringing an exhibition to life.

The artists are looking for volunteers for Friday, May 28th through Sunday, May 30th.

To register for volunteering, please send a brief introduction to Jordyn Newsome, Gallery & Exhibitions Manager, at gallery@locustprojects.org and include your availability. Please also direct any questions to gallery@locustprojects.org or 305.576.8570.

About LOCUST PROJECTS INC

Location:

3852 N MIAMI AVE, MIAMI, FL 33127, US

Mission Statement

Locust Projects is a not for profit exhibition space dedicated to providing contemporary visual artists the freedom to experiment with new ideas without the pressures of gallery sales or limitations of conventional exhibition spaces. Local, national and international artists are encouraged to create site-specific installations as an extension of their representative work. Locust Projects supports the local community through educational initiatives and programming that are free to the public.

Description

Founded in 1998 by a trio of Miami-based artists: Elizabeth Withstandley, Westen Charles, and COOPER, the organization was among the first to open in a converted warehouse in Miami's once depressed Wynwood neighborhood.

In 2000, Locust Projects became incorporated and organized its first Board of Directors. Locust Projects was officially recognized as a 501 (c) (3) not for profit institution in 2002.

A grant award from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in 2006 allowed the organization to hire its first full-time Executive Director and subsequently supported the relocation of Locust Projects to Miami's Design District in May 2009.

Additional major grants from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, as well as the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs have supported our continued growth.

This once fledgling organization has burgeoned into a recognized art institution in Miami, presenting ambitious works by a diverse group of artists at critical stages in their careers and growing the organization's reputation both nationally and internationally.

Locust Projects is proud to be W.A.G.E. Certified (Working Artists in the Greater Economy), ensuring that we have and we will continue to compensate artists fairly. For more information on W.A.G.E. certification, click here.
