About Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park

Mission Statement

The mission of Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park is to secure, preserve, interpret, protect and restore the Gold Discovery Site and maintain its historical integrity for the people of California and the world.

Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park (SHP) in Coloma, California is the site of the gold discovery that initiated the California Gold Rush. Prior to the gold rush, the Coloma Valley was home to native Americans who lived off the richness of the land. In the early days of the gold rush, Coloma was the hub of mining activity up and down the American river and the many canyons surrounding the valley. Today Marshall Gold Discovery SHP hosts schoolchildren from all over the state and visitors from all over the world who come to learn more about the rush for riches that helped propel California into statehood in 1850.

Marshall Gold Discovery SHP has many volunteer opportunities available including:

  • Leading educational programs, talks and tours
  • Living history demonstrations
  • Blacksmithing
  • Working in the mercantile
  • Greeting visitors at the visitor center/museum
  • Performing park maintenance/landscaping
  • Promoting the park and its events
  • Interpreting historic buildings
  • Research
  • Preservation of the library collections
  • Clerical and administrative tasks

Spring is a busy season at Marshall Gold Discovery SHP with thousands of schoolchildren visiting the park and taking part in the Eureka Program. Volunteers are needed to lead gold panning lessons, Wagons Ho programs, pouch making activities, and park tours. The park also hosts two big events during the year in October and December that require substantial volunteer assistance.
