Rian Immigrant Center is currently recruiting Volunteer Teaching Assistants for our Adult ESOL classes to support our ESOL teachers and students during class. Volunteers are NOT required to be native English language speakers or U.S. Citizens. Ideally we are looking for volunteers who can commit on a longer term basis (6+ months, as opposed to for just one semester). Students and non students encouraged to apply.

Start Date: ASAP

Schedule - pick one that works for you, or if you are open to any time slot, let us know when you email.

  1. Mon and Wed: Level 3, intermediate: (5:45) 6-8pm (also plugged into whatsapp group during the week to provide support via text to students) evening
  2. Tues and Thurs: Level 2, high beginner: (5:45) 6:00pm - 8:00pm (also plugged into whatsapp group during week to provide support) evening
  3. Tues and Thurs: Level 1: 10:00am - Noon (also plugged into whatsapp group during week to provide support) morning

Time Commitment:

● 4.5 hours a week in class: either Monday/Wednesday (intermediate ESOL) or

Tuesday/Thursday (beginner ESOL) evenings from 5:45-8:00 p.m.

● <1 hour outside of class for student communication

(Fall and spring semesters run for 18 weeks; summer session runs for 6 weeks - please inquire about class schedule.)

Duties/Responsibilities:

● Assist ESOL instructor during live, remote classes

● Support students’ language development and mastery of new technology skills

● Communicate with ESOL instructor and students via WhatsApp

● Support in building community and fostering a welcoming, safe environment where

adult English learners can relax into the learning process and develop their

language skills and cultural knowledge

● Meet with other ESOL teaching assistants and Director of Education and/or ESOL

instructors in monthly team meetings

Skills/Qualifications:

● Adult ESOL teaching or tutoring experience, preferred

● Excellent verbal and written communication skills

● Proficiency with Zoom, Google Drive, email

● Comfortability teaching adult English learners of various language proficiency levels

● Fluency in English (native fluency not required)

● Strong personal commitment to anti-racism
