We are looking for a female, Spanish-speaking volunteer to mentor a 15-year-old refugee from Honduras. She has been in the United States since September of 2019 and she entered Bethany's program in March of 2021 and she lives at our girls' group home. Her case manager shared, "She is very social and loves spending time with people. She has a strong character and knows what she likes and dislikes. She is newer to the program, so we are still getting to know what she is like. She has lived with a lot of different people since she has been in MI. At her previous placement, she had very negative behavior and was aggressive which caused for her to be switched from home to home. Since she has been in Bethany's group home, she appears to have a better attitude and behavior overall. The structure/rules of the program have helped her.
Background: In Honduras, this youth lived with her mother, sister, brother, and stepfather. She went to school and also worked as a care provider for an older woman. She fled Honduras a gang-related trauma (more details can be provided later).
About Bethany Christian Services
1050 36th St. SE, Suite 400, Grand Rapids, MI 49508, US
Bethany demonstrates the love and compassion of Jesus Christ by protecting children, empowering youth, and strengthening families through quality social services.
For refugees fleeing danger, the search for safety can be extremely challenging. And too often, people become numbers in a system that can feel impossible to navigate. That’s why we guide, protect, advocate for, and support refugees. In the U.S., we offer resettlement and continued support services in strategic locations.
Bethany Christian Services' Refugee and Immigrant Services program encompasses adult and family resettlement as well as refugee foster care for Unaccompanied Children and Unaccompanied Refugee Minors. Our services for unaccompanied refugee youth include case management, counseling, housing (foster homes, group homes, independent living), classes (New Arrival, Life Skills, driver's training), and volunteer mentoring and tutoring.
