Mission Statement
Pawster Nashville's mission is to end pet homelessness before it begins. We provide short-term foster care for cats and dogs, when their owners are in crisis and unable to care for them. The people we serve face a range of crises, from eviction, job loss, domestic violence, homelessness, incarceration, addiction rehab, hospitalization, and even military deployment. By providing foster care until pet owners are back on their feet, we give owners another option other than surrender. This keeps another pet out of the shelter, and it keeps a family together.
Description
"Crisis Foster Care" is an alternative to surrender. When a pet owner experiences a temporary crisis, such as eviction, domestic violence, hospitalization, addiction treatment, incarceration, or military deployment, Pawster Nashville places their cat or dog in a foster home until the owner is back on their feet and ready to be reunited. This crucial service decreases surrender rates in the community, allowing rescues and shelters to save more lives, and it keeps families together through crisis.
Although Pawster was born in the era of COVID-19, this unmet need existed in Nashville long before. According to Natalie Corwin, President and CEO of Nashville’s Pet Community Center, "At Pet Community Center we receive hundreds of phone calls and emails every year from people who need temporary assistance with their pets... I'm so excited to welcome Pawster to the Nashville community because they will be filling a crucial need with a singular focus on temporary fostering."
Pet homelessness is only a symptom; Pawster Nashville addresses the cause.
