We are seeking volunteers to be a Vulnerable Adult Guardian ad Litem. You would advocate for those 18 years and older with mental and/or physical impairments who have been placed into Adult Protective Services Emergency Protective Custody. These vulnerable adults are often victims of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and self neglect. You would be their voice advocating for their well being.
As a VAGAL volunteer you will get to know the adult and interact with other's involved in the adult's life, including family members, caregivers, social workers and medical providers. You will gather information about the adult, find out what option(s) would improve the individual's situation, and make unbiased recommendations to the court based on what is in the best interest of the adult.
Training is provided in person (at this time) as well as shadowing another VAGAL at two hearings to see the process.
Volunteers would be given cases near their local counties although our program is statewide.
We really want to hear from you. This is a rewarding and challenging volunteer opportunity. Unfortunately, we currently aren't accepting applications from Richland, Lexington, Oconee, Pickens and Anderson counties.

Description
BE THE VOICE!! We are seeking volunteers to advocate for those 18 years of age and older with mental and /or physical impairments who have been placed into Adult Protective Services Emergency Protective Custody. These vulnerable adults are often victims of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and self-neglect. We need YOUR voice to help advocate for their well being.
As a VAGAL volunteer you will get to know the adult and make unbiased recommendations to the court based on what is in the best interest of the adult.
Our VAGAL volunteers come from all professions and educational backgrounds. Some are retired and some still work. They are all passionate and caring individuals who are the voices of South Carolina's most vulnerable adults.
Training consists of an all day virtual training. In addition to the training new volunteers are required to shadow two hearings in family court. All volunteers must pass a background and reference check.
We cover all 46 counties and need volunteers in every part of the state. This is a challenging and rewarding volunteer opportunity. We look forward to hearing from you.
