Summary: The Community Development & Planning Intern, working under the direction of the Director of Community Development and Planning, shall support KYCC’s new Community Development and Planning program through research, data collection and analysis to inform the shaping of future policies.

Duties include:

  • Maintain the program's contact management database
  • Maintain the community development project tracking database and related map(s)
  • Monitor/track related public meetings (e.g., city, county) and report back on critical project or policy related milestones
  • Research critical development projects and policies in regards to city/county approval processes (i.e., zoning entitlements, CEQA review, building permits, motions, resolutions, etc.)
  • Track various mainstream development related outlets and publications (e.g., Urbanize, Streetsblog)

Interns will leave with:

  • A functional knowledge of city/county zoning regulations and related land use entitlements processes
  • Functional knowledge of city/county affordable housing requirements as part of major development projects
  • Functional knowledge of City of LA's community planning (i.e., general plan land use element) process
  • Critical analysis and research skills related to community development and urban planning in a real-world setting
  • Basic understanding of real estate development impacts in the context of community development

Qualifications and Requirements:

The ideal candidate should be currently enrolled in an accredited college/university program and majoring in one of the following areas of study: urban/city planning, urban studies, urban design, environmental science, architecture, real estate development, public policy or other relevant disciplines. Cursory knowledge of GIS, zoning, and/or urban design principles preferred.

The mission of the Koreatown Youth and Community Center, Inc. (KYCC) is to serve the evolving needs of the Korean American population in the greater Los Angeles Area as well as the multi-ethnic Koreatown community programs and services are directed toward recently immigrated, economically disadvantaged youth and families, and to promote community socioeconomic empowerment.

Description

The Koreatown Youth and Community Center was established in 1975 to support a growing population of at-risk youth in Los Angeles. Today, KYCC is the leading multiservice organization in Koreatown, supporting low-income and recently immigrated children and their families in the areas of education, health, housing, and finances. Our volunteer opportunities range from short-to-long term, unskilled to skilled, for youth and adults, and ranging from everything from community research to tutoring to tree planting. REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 18
  • Orientation or Training
  • Time commitment: Minimum of 10 - 12 hours per week for at least 3 months. Hours must be completed Monday – Friday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
  • Interested candidates will be asked to submit a 1) statement of interest 2) resume, including at least two professional or academic references and 3) list of relevant coursework. Interview required prior to start
