If you love poetry journals and books, and you consider yourself pretty good at organizing them, then you might find this project a little fun (though it's not for everyone)!

Book Cataloging

We have a number of journals that need to be scanned or manually inputed into our library catalog. We also have Spanish poetry books that need cataloging for those of you who are bilingual. We use Libib for our catalog system, which has a super user friendly interface and back end for entering the books. We also have a computer for you to use.

More

While the cataloging is a pretty urgent need, considering that we'll be opening again hopefully soonish, we do have other things you can help out with if you'd like:

pamphlet folding
publication research
help with zine binding
website updating
graphics
newsletter writing
event production
communications
social media

It all depends on your interests! You can also do this for school credit, but you would have to connect us with your school program administrator or professor to set that up. Again, right now we're mostly interested in help with getting that catalog up and running.

Our space is fun, the opportunity is flexible considering its a volunteer position.

About ALTERNATIVE FIELD Inc

Location:

135 NORTH AVENUE 50, LOS ANGELES, CA 90042, US

Mission Statement

Alternative Field is a reading room, poetry library, lab/press, and resource center for inviting poetry to influence, inspire, nurture, and create dialogue as a tool to bring awareness to and exercise thought around issues that are central to our existence and to our potential.

Description

"What happens after the reading, in between the writing, thinking, and living?"

Alternative Field was operating as a small press and resource to the community since 2016 and became a library and resource center in 2019. We are now housed in a space within the Avenue 50 Studio building complex in Highland Park, the hometown of its founding director, Jessica Ceballos y Campbell.

Alternative Field welcomes dialogue, discourse, co-operative thinking in ways that may instigate internal but constructive criticism, and we do this through curated workshops, discussions, interdisciplinary events, and ethically mindful artistic collaborations and partnerships.

We publish anthologies that invite our communities to use their known and/or unknown poetic sensibilities to share this discourse and to archive it for future generations.

Alternative Field utilizes poetry [in opposition to violent systems of erasure] as a means to bring people across communities together for a common cause of re-associating our environments to those which are culturally familiar and relevant, in order to resist erasure, and to emerge from this era moving forward toward a more just future, guided by worldviews that foster collaboration and mutuality.
