ALTERNATIVE FIELD INC

If you love poetry journals and books, and you consider yourself pretty good at organizing them, then you might find this project a little fun (though it's not for everyone)!

Book Cataloging

We have a number of journals that need to be scanned or manually inputed into our library catalog. We also have Spanish poetry books that need cataloging for those of you who are bilingual. We use Libib for our catalog system, which has a super user friendly interface and back end for entering the books. We also have a computer for you to use.

More

While the cataloging is a pretty urgent need, considering that we'll be opening again hopefully soonish, we do have other things you can help out with if you'd like:

pamphlet folding
publication research
help with zine binding
website updating
graphics
newsletter writing
event production
communications
social media

It all depends on your interests! You can also do this for school credit, but you would have to connect us with your school program administrator or professor to set that up. Again, right now we're mostly interested in help with getting that catalog up and running.

Our space is fun, the opportunity is flexible considering its a volunteer position.

Mission Statement

Alternative The alternative to what has been is better and brighter and real. We know this because of where we have been, where our ancestors have been, and where we know we will go. There is no alternative but one that is inclusive of all of us. Poetry has drawn the map. Field No boundaries or fences, no crops, only green pastures, gardens, and plains to become proof of our potential. We know these fields, their seeds carry witness, and they carry the other side of the storm. Alternative Field is a reading room, multilingual poetry library, lab/press, and resource center for inviting poetry to influence, inspire, nurture, and create dialogue as a tool to bring awareness to and exercise thought around issues that are central to our existence and to our potential.

Description

Alternative Field was operating as a press and resource to the community since 2016 and became a library and resource center in 2019. We are now housed in a space within the Avenue 50 Studio building complex in Highland Park.

Our primary function, purpose, goal, and intention is to help others reconstruct their world not only as an affront to current oppressive violence but as a way to honor the resiliency, beauty, and strength of our communities. We do this through poetry and poetic dialogues. The library was founded by community activist, poet, writer Jessica Ceballos y Campbell, who develops multidisciplinary programming to bring people in the community together for a common cause. She uses poetry as the medium that re-associates and binds because it's what pulled her from trauma and the resulting disorientation caused by violence, abuse, and the foster system. Poetry was the clarity for her and has created access to so much. She knows it's done the same for others and can do the same for more people.

We have published many community anthology chapbooks of poetry, and we plan to publish several more this year. We also hope to open a few days a week to welcome community members to our space and share ideas, resources, books, and a love of poetry. We plan to continue public dialogue over Instagram and Zoom, and we plan to expand to physical workshops and roundtables later.
