Covid-19 Response Food Agent Volunteer Position Description

Description: As part of the Covid-19 response, the Baltimore County Department of Aging (BCDA) is recruiting volunteers to act as food agents for homebound Baltimore County seniors registered in the Home Team Program, as well as other seniors in need of food deliveries. Food agents volunteers are assigned by BCDA staff to at least one (but not more than five) client(s) to pick up food from a designated food pantry of county-sponsored food distribution site. Afterwards, the volunteer delivers the food to the client(s) on an agreed upon schedule.

Prior to becoming a food agent, individuals are required to complete a BCDA volunteer application, provide a copy of current driver's license and proof of auto insurance. All potential volunteers must have successful comprehensive background check performed. Approved food agents will receive responsibilities and other logistics with a member of the Home Team staff by phone or video conference before beginning their assignment. Priority will be given to volunteers able to commit to at least one client assignment for the duration of the Covid-19 response period.

Must by 18 years of age or older, accessible by phone and have a clean driving record. Have a car in good working condition for making deliveries. Able to bend, stand, sit and walk independently. Able to left and carry AT LEAST 25 lbs.

Volunteer Responsibilities: The volunteer is provided with a report listed the assigned food pantry/food distribution site and the contact information for the client(s) (name, address, phone number). One day before the delivery, call the senior to indicate a window of time the senior should expect to receive the food. Notify the Home Team staff before and after the delivery is made by calling 410-887-4141. Drive to the pantry or food distribution site on day indicated on report to pick up food. Ensure contactless delivery, Covid-19 adherence to social distancing and mask wearing, and deliver food promptly. Document all trips, miles driven, bags delivered and volunteer hours on monthly report.

The Home Team Program is a county-wide volunteer program of the Baltimore County Department of Aging. Volunteers visit seniors who are confined to their home, unable to drive, live alone and are at-risk of becoming socially isolated in the community. Seniors (in need)can participate in the Home Team by calling our office. They can also be referred through a human service agency or a primary care physician. Home Team volunteers work with the seniors, Home Team staff and referral sources to ensure the seniors remain socially engaged and connected to the community. They provide the necessary social interactions and well-being checks to help seniors remain independent in their homes longer.

Description

Volunteer Applicants Must:
Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age or more. Volunteer applicants must complete a formal application, pass a background check, interview and complete a 2-hour orientation. To complete the background check, volunteer applicants must submit a copy of their social security number, government issued photo identification, current residential address and a signed release of information form to be kept on file.
Volunteers Must:
Make at LEAST a 6-month commitment and agree to visit with a senior for at least one hour per week. The weekly time commitment can be a combination of phone calls and in-home visits. Volunteers must also have their own dependable vehicle with current car insurance to travel to and from the senior’s home. Volunteers must have a dependable phone to communicate with the Home Team staff and their assigned senior. Volunteers MUST submit a formal report EACH MONTH of their time spent with the senior and document any issues or concerns. Volunteers must be able to perform all aspects of the volunteer role independently. Volunteers must abide by all program policies and procedures. Placements are based on a combination of volunteer preference and senior availability/need.
